What I didn't know about Canola oil

Canola oil stands for "Canadian oil, low acid".

It is produced by grinding a particular strain of rapeseeds of low erucic acid (i.e. Food grade rapeseed or Rapeseed 00). The health impact of erucic acid  is under debate. Although once banned in North America and European Union, it is now generally regarded as safe to human.

Its saturated fat content (7%) is half of what's in olive oil.

It is the same as Rapeseed oil sold in UK.

The taste of rapeseed oil is reported to be bland, unpleasant and like rancid walnut and smells cabbagey.

Rapeseeds are now used as a source of biofuel and the particular strain (i.e. industrial rapeseed) needs to have erucic acid to produce functional biofuel.
